New Era hat sizes, decoded

New Era uses three sizing systems at once: fitted fractions (59FIFTY), stretch-fit letters (39THIRTY) and adjustable closures. The fractions below are the widely used standard US fitted scale — the same circumference table this site is built on — so you can match your head measurement to any New Era cap's label.

Which New Era system are you buying?

59FIFTY — closed, fitted

Exact eighth-fractions, sewn shut. Choose by the chart above with zero give — between sizes, take the larger. The fraction on the cap's underside tag is the size; the sticker is just packaging.

39THIRTY — stretch letters

An elastic band does the fitting: pick S/M, M/L, L/XL (or the extreme ends where offered) against the span it claims. The '39' names the style, not a size — the letter on the tag is the size.

9FORTY / snapbacks — adjustable

The strap closes the gap for many heads; one size covers roughly 55–62 cm with adjustments. Crown depth still varies — if you measure big, look for the deeper-crown styles rather than cinching tight.

There is no New Era-only table on this site: the fitted fractions above are the standard scale New Era and most cap makers share, which is why a new era fitted hat size chart looks identical to the general one. Unofficial page — brand names belong to their owners; no logos are used.

New Era sizing FAQs

What New Era size is a 7 1/4?
A 7 1/4 fitted cap is cut for a head circumference of 57.7 cm (22 3/4 in) — the same number as the general US chart. The fraction printed on the tag is the standard eighth-fraction scale: 7 1/4, 7 5/8 and so on, shared across cap makers.
What size New Era 39THIRTY should I get?
39THIRTY is a stretch-fit: match your head circumference to the combined letters (S/M–XL/XXL). Measure first; treat brand-published spans as a general guide and prefer the official New Era sizing page when in doubt.
Do New Era fitted caps run small or big?
A 59FIFTY fits to the printed fraction, and the fraction maps to measured circumference — the cap tends to feel snug out of the box and relax slightly with wear. Between two sizes, buyers usually size up for 59FIFTY and keep the tighter option for stretch-fit styles.
What's the biggest size in a standard New Era fitted cap?
Core 59FIFTY runs typically go up to 8 or, in extended DD/CB ranges, beyond — 8 1/4 is about as high as common retail charts list, for heads around 65.4 cm.
Is this page affiliated with New Era?
No. Hat Sizes Chart is independent and unofficial; this is an explanation of how the commonly used sizing works, derived from published public conversion rules. New Era's own size guide is the source of truth for their specific styles.
