Crochet hat size chart

A crochet (or hand-knit) hat is made smaller than the head and relies on the fabric's stretch — the opposite assumption from a sewn or fitted hat. Size by head circumference, subtract the ease, and convert the target to a crown diameter.

Target sizes by age & head

Head medians are from WHO/CDC-sourced kids' data and the adult chart; measure whenever you can. Ages are only a starting point.

Ease assumption −2.5 cm (24 cm of grip feels right from newborn to adult). For tighter cuffs use −2 cm; for soft roving or loose stitches, up to −4 cm. Crown targets assume working the flat circle until its diameter equals the target ÷ π. Checked 2026-10-21 against WHO/CDC growth data.

The quick way: crown diameter in one formula

1. Measure

Head circumference at the hat line, just above the ears. Example: 57 cm.

2. Subtract the ease

57 − 2.5 = 54.5 cm hat circumference target (gives the needed stretch of ~2.5 cm).

3. ÷ π

Crown diameter: 54.5 ÷ π ≈ 17.35 cm — stop increasing and work even when the circle measures that.

The same ÷ π rule that runs the whole site — see how conversions work.

Crochet hat sizing FAQs

How much smaller should a crochet hat be than the head?
Count on negative ease of about 1.5–4 cm: a beanie-style crochet hat for a 57 cm head should measure roughly 53–55.5 cm in circumference (or about 16.9–17.7 cm across the crown when worked in the round). Stiffer or thick stitches need more ease; loose lace knits grip fine with less.
What diameter should my crown be before I stop increasing?
Work the flat circle until its diameter equals the target hat circumference divided by π, then stop increasing and work even. For a 55 cm target: 55 ÷ π ≈ 17.5 cm crown diameter. A quarter of a centimetre in crown diameter moves the final circumference by about 0.8 cm — check both.
How do I measure the head I am making for?
Same rule as buying: snug tape, level, just above the ears and eyebrows. For gifts, follow the age-guided circle in the table below — it is a median from WHO/CDC data, so round the finished size generously and err toward the larger span.
Why is my crochet hat coming out too small?
Three usual reasons: the crown was stopped one increase round early, the easing was calculated for the head but the stitches are stiff (thick wool, single crochet in dense tension), or the piece was measured while stretched. Measure relaxed, and increase the crown diameter for stiffness.
Do crochet hats for different styles need different ease?
A cuffed beanie wants to grip the cuff line — aim for the snug end of the range. A slouchy beanie needs the same grip at the cuff, but can have extra length and a roomier body; the ease rule applies at the cuff, not the slouch.
